I had posted a pic here

and got this comment from one forum user:
I suggest you convert the colour profile to sRGB before posting on the web. Why d you use the profile you do (Dot Gain 15)?
I had set the profile to sRGB in photoshop CS4 before saving the jpg and uploading it, so does anyone understand what is going on here?

Is it a problem with CS4 files being read by previous versions of Ps perhaps?

    (yes 'maximise compatability' is set)

    thanks

    h,

Please know that for links, you just need to type in the full URL for it to automatically become a link. For quotes, hit ''return'' then preface the quote with a %26gt;.

Are you saying that the file is converted automatically from sRGB? I'm not following you here. What settings do you have as defaults in Edit... --%26gt; Color Settings... ?

    Neil
Jpg profiles a bit funny from Ps CS4
Thanks for your advice on links

File was originally a CR2 file, and in ACR was in Prophoto before I changed it to 8 bit and then EDIT%26gt;convert to profile%26gt;sRGB and saved as a jpg before uploading

So file wasnt converted automatically UNLESS the hosting site also did something to it. I converted it myself in CS4

Have I explained it ok - please ask again if not?

Well, the file is grayscale, but includes an sRGB profile.

Photoshop recognizes that the profile doesn't match the mode, says it's invalid, and opens the file with the workingspace grayscale profile instead.

Yes, something changed that image after S4W or Photoshop - other metadata was stripped.

My guess is the hosting site software did it, and doesn't know how to handle profiles.

CS4...How do you draw/paint in pure...

Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm absolutely new to this stuff and I'm getting a lot of great info here which I'm keeping meticulous notes of...

I've figured out how to paint with CS4 in colors and ''near'' black/grey/ white (by going to the extreme left of the color square in any given color but it still seems as if if it's influenced by the ''parent'' color whose square I happen to be choosing from within. Is there a ''pure monochrome black/grey/white range'' of tones that I'm missing somewhere and, if so, what's the procedure for toggling back and forth quickly/easily between this monochrome and color?

    Thanks.
CS4...How do you draw/paint in pure...
    Len,

Change your color mode to Grayscale.

Image --%26gt; Mode --%26gt; Grayscale (or any other supported color mode).

    %26gt;what's the procedure for

    toggling back and forth
quickly/easily between this monochrome and color?

    ???

Why don't you just put in the right numbers in the color palette?

...''Why don't you just put in the right numbers in the color palette?''...

Honestly, I'm not even aware that a number/color palette option existed for switching back and forth between this grayscale and color...but, then again, it wasn't that long ago that I thought burning a CD involved the use of a cigarette lighter!

What number values would you enter to do this?

    Thanks...

    Len,

    You

    don't

''toggle back and forth between grayscale and color''. Once you desaturate your images, the colors are gone.

If you're working in RGB, equal numbers (from 1 to 254) for each of channels, will give you neutral grays. The lower the number, the darker the gray.

0,0,0 is pure black; 255,255,255 is pure white.

Play around with values for your brushes, it will sink in pretty fast.

...''0,0,0 is pure black; 255,255,255 is pure white.''...

    Thanks.

Am I understanding correctly then that you cannot create work in CS4 which includes both rich colors and straight monochromatic black and white simultaneously? (i.e., a painting which includes figures wearing brightly colored garments and figures painted/drawn as if they were taken from a black and white photo or charcoal drawing) Also would this disallow working a PS painting up as a grayscale value study and then glazing color over with low opacity/greater opacity where needed?

    Len,

Yes you can desaturate individual selections and leave other parts in color. But not by ''toggling back and forth''.

There are many ways to do it, all involving selections, some involve layers and masks, etc.

I don't follow the last sentence in your post, sorry. Are you talking about toning an grayscale image? That's easily done with a solid color layer with opacity to suit.

But in any event, you need to ''Read The
Fine Manual'', a book or two on Photoshop, and read some tutorials online. Google is your friend.

...''But in any event, you need to ''Read The Fine Manual'', a book or two on Photoshop, and read some tutorials online. Google is your friend.''...

Not to fret...I've picked up a book or two and am checking out some other tutorials as we speak! Google directed me to this board and I've received some excellent tips here which have been most helpful in getting ''off the ground'' so to speak at times when the aforementioned books/tutorials are difficult to wade through. Again, apologies for the beginner's questions and, should anyone feel the need to jot down my screen name as an asker-of-beginner's questions with a notation to ''ignore this user'', believe me, I'm hip. No need to waste keystrokes on the ''go back to the information kiosk'' angle.

If you want to work in what was known as Black and White photography, you need to be in grayscale mode. stay in grayscale mode unless you want to add color to the image.

Since we don't have multiple mode images, you might consider doing your 'pen and ink' black and white image in one grayscale document and then saving that image again under a different name in rgb to do your color work. Make sure you are doing your grayscale work on a layer with transparency over a white background. That way you can save the grayscale image layer with transparency and overprint it over your color gouache work as a separate file, black over color, so to speak. Use your black layer in your rgb image as a guide then turn it off to save your color work to print separately.

Actually, you may get just as good a result with less fuss by following the ''0,0,0 is pure black; 255,255,255 is pure white'' rule for your b%26amp;w illustration layer and do your colors on other layers.

I don't have experience with 'Painter' but you might want to check into that program if you want another take on using watercolor or other illustration styles in your document.

Post a link to your work here. We want to see the results of our recommendations please.

    Thanks,

    Ken

...''Post a link to your work here. We want to see the results of our recommendations please.''...

    Ken,

Here's a sampling of my (mostly) drawings. The only one that's been worked on digitally is ''Shepherdess With a Piglet'' and it's only been worked slightly. One of the big attractions of getting into working digitally, for me, has been the prospect of returning to working in color as I seem to have developed some allergies to a good deal of traditional art making media. Hopefully, as I get more practice with CS4 or other programs I'll be posting digital work to the site linked below.

    http://gtx56.deviantart.com/gallery/#_featured

    Glad I asked. Excellent work.

    Beautiful stuff.

For some reason, just because of the nature of your post, I was thinking you would be doing stuff like this:

I wasn't too far off actually,

    Ken

    Thanks, Ken.

Just having dabbled in CS4 for a couple of weeks now, I think the challenge will be to hold onto the loose and expressive elements (as in the masterfully done image you posted). I'm thinking there's got to be a lot of temptation to work a piece forever in a medium as correctable as digital!

for what you are doing you might want to look at Painter.

    Photoshop CS3 & 10.5.6

Hi all, apologies if this issue has been raised previously.

I was wondering if anyone had had any problems saving to a networked drive in Photoshop CS3 whilst using OS X 10.5.6?

We had terrible problems in most iterations of Leopard whilst working off our server (I know this isn't considered good working practice), and was wondering if we could go back to it without loosing work.

    TIA
    Photoshop CS3 %26 10.5.6
This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):

If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please

    cease and desist immediately
in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files.
Working across a network is not supported.

    See:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html

    Copy the
CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.

Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work. It should.

Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does
not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.

If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.

When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

Is there a way of making contacts in CS4??? I can't find it and I have to go back to CS3 every time I have to give proofs to my clients. I hope is not taken out from the program.

    Thanks,

    Dan,

    It's part of Bridge now.

    Neil
is there a way of making contacts in...
If you want the old Photoshop CS3 version to use in Photoshop CS4, you need to install the optional files which are down-loadable from:

    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb404900

...for no apparent good reason the simple drop-down choice was removed. Just to give folks another reason not to upgrade to CS4 I guess, or maybe because we need more items in our learning curve. Go figure.

    Allen:

The Bridge method works faster but if you still want to do it the CS3 way, you can.

    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb404900

Thanks to you all, especially you Ann. I'll do the CS3 way as I added some actions to the process that makes the proofs more attractive- logo on top, 1 pix black borders around the images etc.

    Dan,

Publicly exposing your email address to the spambots is not a prudent idea. :/

Thanks. Did not think of it due to to the forum environment.

    I'll remember your advise.

    Dan,

    I deleted your email addy]

    Neil

    Dan,

    I deleted your email addy.

    Neil

    Hey Dan,

I've found the ''PS CS4 goodie'' folder on the adobe site and installed the contact sheet II option into the automate area - you should be able to do the same and save the actions set you use in CS3 then bring the set into CS4 and get what you need with out having to keep going back into CS3. It's just not practical for me to have a set of contacts in pdf format, it's definitely a step backwards for me.

I'd hoped for an improvement, currently I drag the custom sized sheets I've got it generating as tiff files onto another tiff template I've set up, so I can include a title etc on the actual print out - but this is time consuming. I hope you dont mind me asking but how did you edit yours with actions? I'd love to automate the process but not sure how as each title is different as per the job, and I like to add page numbers.

Apologies for the rambling rant, hope you get sorted Dan.

PS CS3 green fringe with USM

My radius setting in USM is causing some detail, usually grey, to turn bright green.

The most extreme example has been on grey chicken wire on a grey background. I have also had it on spots of grey lichen on a grey wall.

    I have trashed preferences.

    Any ideas?
PS CS3 green fringe with USM
What settings are you using for USM? Can you post a link to a sample of what you see?

    Neil
PS CS3 green fringe with USM
Could this be the result of Chromatic Aberration (a lens defect) that exists in your original image and is being accentuated when you apply USM?

What kind of monitor are you using?

    Bob,

Also, if you push some ACR color settings to far, you can get fringing as well.

Any of the items cited here can be responsible. So, please get back to us.

    Thanks.

    Can Photoshop work with Voice...

    Hi there,

I have been searching for answers for some time and no one seems to be able to help. I am a photographer and a severe RSI sufferer and sitting at the computer using a mouse or even a tablet still gives me excruciating pain after many yearsand every type of physical therapy. I am not here to seek advice on ergonomics or any of that stuff! What I really need advice on is this: with the reliance on computers in digital photography now, is there ANY way to make Photoshop (and related Creative Suite software such as Bridge) work through Voice Recognition with the Mac?

I currently run a Power Mac with 10.4.11 and CS3. I have to get help to work with RAW images in Photoshop and would love to just be able to open the program and use the sliders and menu commands myself instead of relying on others and trying to instruct them on how to work on my images. I am thinking of upgrading to a new Mac and want to see if it's possible to get something installed or programmed to help me.

This is my last hope of being able to continue with what I love. Any advice or links to info from you guys would be SO appreciatedThanks! Jim.

    Jim,

With a little luck, Chris Cox may chime in and be able to offer some guidance.

    Neil
    Can Photoshop work with Voice...
    Not by default.

And I haven't looked into third party utilities to automate Photoshop by voice.

i believe this technology is'nt in distant future.

if you go for e-speaking.com or do a youtube session you will find videos suc this one here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgJyqvcAXe0%26amp;feature=related you will also find curious ones there.

You can do it to some extent using the Speech Recognition in Mac OS X.

I experimented with this a couple of versions of Photoshop ago (well before CS4 and Leopard), trying to reproduce the scene in the movie Blade Runner where Harrison Ford's character edits a photo by talking to the computer across the room.

Go to your Mac OS X Preferences and click Speech. Click the Speech Recognition tab and click Speakable Items: On. If the Microphone is set correctly and you understand the current Listening Method (the key to press, or the phrase to say), you're ready to add commands. Mac OS X already comes with a bunch of sample commands, and can define speakable keyboard shortcuts for individual applications.

Switch to Photoshop and say ''Define Keyboard Command.'' (How you exactly do this depends on how you set up listening, so for example if you're doing it Star Trek style with the default Listening Method of saying ''Computer'' first, then you'd say ''Computer: Define Keyboard Command.'') When the Define Keyboard Command dialog comes up, you press the keystroke for the command you want to invoke. So if I want to make the Image %26gt; Image Size command speakable, I press its shortcut, Command-Option-I, and click OK. Then I type ''Image Size'' as the spoken phrase I want it to recognize. From now on, whenever I say ''Image Size'' the Image %26gt; Image Size dialog box comes up.

If you want to do things not represented by a keyboard shortcut, you can make Speech Recognition trigger AppleScripts and Automator workflows, or use the built in Speakable Items like Move Page Up and Move Page Down (to scroll the Photoshop window). When I tried the Blade Runner scenario I was able to make Photoshop change the view and run some commands like Unsharp Mask, as in the movie where Ford says ''Pan right and pull back. Enhance.'' I was surprised at how much of that allegedly futuristic scene I could actually do with a stock Mac and Photoshop. I just tried it in CS4 and it still works.

That's about all I tried--this is the full extent of my knowledge on this subject, and I had to Google around a little to remind me how I did that few years ago.

Thank you Conrad, for your time spent in posting this reply. I will definitely give your suggestions a try and let you know how I get on. Anything that saves my hands at this point is welcome relief.

Thanks Thomas, very interesting stuff. I am a Mac guy so Vista does seems alien to me but I'm open minded at this point. Seems some of the folks commenting on that video don't seem too impressed by the voice capabilities, however!

%26gt; I am a Mac guy so Vista does seems alien to me but I'm open minded at this point.

    I can understand.

%26gt; Seems some of the folks commenting on that video don't seem too impressed by the voice capabilities, however!

yeah, that's what i wrote, there are curios videos about speech rec in vista ;) but, to be honest, the comments at youtube are in general very distracting and rude.

also from my side, good luck man.

Hmmm, shouting ''HIGHPASS 15 PIXELS! GAUSSIAN BLUR 5 PIXELS! LAYER MODE TO OVERLAY!'' and Ps does the rest. Sounds great to me. Would be great for Tool switching too.

And expletives should perform an undo?

I thought that Mac OS had a foundation for voice control, but I guess that it needs to have access to ''hooks'' in the Application Scripting

Even automator has no control on this?

Unless Chris means that there is no built-in voice control in Photoshop, but it can be built using the OS tools?

Even OS tools would need something Photoshop specific to access all the functionality. And I don't think you're going to paint by voice anytime soon.

%26gt;And I don't think you're going to paint by voice anytime soon.

We will file that as a feature of the Talent Filter, then...
