schaflining

Can anyone help with schaflining images for press, the procedure in the way it is done?

Thanks.

I don't think I have ever heard of this in my whole career. Do you have an example you can direct us to?

Oh I had a funny thought you can probably do it withe a series of curve adjustments. That usually works for most things!

Thanks for your reply,

How can I send you an example?

Schaflining, was an analog photographic method of filtering an image to a halftone using screens. It's been a very long time and I've forgotten much of the process but you manually twisted and rotated various screens that were waves, concentric circles and such alike as well as the halftoning itself. This produced something that was something between a wood/lino cut and halftone. Today you are most likely going to have to turn to a plug-in like:

never used it so I don't know if it would suit your needs.

Thanks, that may have to do, Client is being very specific on the dots though.

In the old days that was simple you would just change the bottom screen from 80 to 133 or something like that depending on what you wanted. The method was analog as you could move any screen by a nat's nugger and the result would be something or nothing. Unless you can find a repro house that still uses 25+ year old kit your client may well be out of luck. thanks for reminding me of the dark room days it's made me smile

Thanks for your help, very much appreciated.

We will be using the andromeda filter by the looks of things.

Would Image/Mode/Bitmap.../Halftone Screen... be sufficently accurate? Might have to up your image resolution to make sure the dots are round enough.

If this is for press, you should really be outputting as a spot channel to a Postscript device and controlling it from the Print/Screen... dialogue as this will use the output device's native reolution to create the halftone dots.

Here's the thing I discovered last night about the Schafline process, though...

Clearing the picture: (Jim Sharp invents a process to enhance picture reproduction in newspapers).

It was originally developed to simulate an increase in tonal range for images printed on newsprint. There's more to it than just running it through a halftone filter or effect.

I don't have the time or inclination to experiment and research to figure out the best way to simulate the process digitally.

Oh I see what it is used it all the time it was usually printed out as a velox print so you could silhouette it or retouch with white opaque or black opaque.

I would think the Bit Map Halftoning would work it has a number of features light dot shape lines and the plug in might work as well.

Bringing back memories.
