Removing shadows from a mesh object.

Can someone give me some advice as to best handle this object? As you can see at the top there's black and gray in between the mesh of the sponge. I would like to make it white to match the background. I've messed around with the Dodge tool and several other things but I can't seem to remove the black/gray without changing the tone of the rest of the photo.

Here's the photo...

Thanks

I think you would need a special tool for that.

Something like Mask Pro: http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=4

Try a 'selective colour' adjustment layer, go to the 'blacks' in the drop-down and move the black slider to the left...

Just do it to the whole image, I had a fiddle and got something usable in a minute... if you want to keep going you could get something better but if you are going that far you might as well re-shoot or put it on a dark or busy background.

That worked absolutely perfectly Phil. Thanks for everyone's help.
